Maria Cornelia Margaretha was born in 1789 in Swellendam, South Africa.  Maria Cornelia Margaretha's father was Johannes Stephanus Fourie and her mother was Cornelia Margaretha Oosthuizen. She had eight brothers and five sisters, named Stephanus Johannes Petrus Jacobus, Johannes Marcus, Johannes Stephanus, Louis Petrus, Andries Jonathan, Marcus Marthinus, David Hermanus Hendrik, Carel Hendrik, Helena Geertruy, Anna Jacoba, Johanna Jacoba Petronella, Hendrika Margaretha Aletta and Hester Dorothea.  She was the oldest of the fourteen children.
