John was born in 1868 in Sydney, , New South Wales, Australia.  John's father was James Woolner and his mother was Elizabeth White.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Woolner and Sarah Gale; his maternal grandparents were Rufus White and Caroline Allen. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named Woolner, George, William, James, David, James Henry, Peter, Lavinia, Lavinia, Mary Ann, Sarah Ann, Louisa and Mary Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the fourteen children. He had nine half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Woolner, George, John, William, James, David, James Henry, Albert Edward, Peter, Mary Ann, Sarah Ann, Louisa and Mary Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 43 on February 18th, 1911 in Sydney, , New South Wales, Australia.
