William was born in 1827 in Dunse, Berwickshire, Scotland. William's father was Thomas Christison and his mother was Magdalene Sleight ?. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, John, Robert, Margaret, Alice, Agnes and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
