Alison, known as Alice, was born about 1836 in Dunse, Berwickshire, Scotland. Alice's father was Thomas Christison and her mother was Magdalene Sleight ?. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, John, Robert, Margaret, Agnes and Mary.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
