Thomas was born in 1721 in Derbyshire, England.  Thomas' father was William (Billy) Henry Mills and his mother was Mary Lavender Walton.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Mills and Margaret Ashmore. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Ambrose, William, Jesse, Sarah, Elizabeth, Miley, Anna and Milly.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
