Louis, known as The German, was born in 0804 in Alsace-Lorraine, Austrasia.1   The German's father was Holy Roman Emperor Lothair Roman I and his mother was Countess Ermengarde de Tours.  His paternal grandparents were Emperor Louis (The Pious) Roman I and Ermengardes (Irmengarde) Hesbaye; his maternal grandparents were Count of Alsace Hugh (le Mefiant) de Bourges III and Countess of Tours Ava Eticondes. He had a brother and two sisters, named The Saxon, Helletrude and Ermengarde (Irmgard).  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 71 on August 31st, 0875 in Italy.2
