Leo was born in Cappadocia, Turkey.¹ Leo's father was Nikephoros Prokas and his mother was Maliene Maleines. His maternal grandparents were Eudokios Maleinos and Anastaso Adralestina. He had three brothers and a sister, named Theophylaktos, Bardas, Nicephorus and Sophia.
