Herbert Maxwell

Herbert was born about 1390 in Caerlaverock.¹ Herbert's father was Sir Herbert Maxwell of Carlaverock and his mother was Katherine Stewart. His paternal grandparents were Sir Robert Maxwell of Carlaverock and Janet Forrester; his maternal grandparents were John Stewart and <Unknown>. He had a sister named Jean. He was the older of the two children. He died before February 14th, 1454 in Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.²

- Herbert Maxwell, 1st Lord Maxwell, so created between 8 Jan 1440/1 and 3 July 1445; knighted 1424; married 1st ?, daughter of Sir Herbert Herries of Terregles; married 2nd Catherine, daughter of Sir William Seton of Seton and widow of Sir Alan Stewart of Darnley, and died by 14 Feb 1453/4.   About Caerlaverock Castle:
  
  The story is obscure until about 1356 when Roger Kirkpatrick is recorded as having returned the whole of Nithsdale to the Scottish Crown. Much of the castle as it is today was completed in the late fifteenth century by Herbert Maxwell, first Lord Maxwell and his son Robert second Lord Maxwell. Caerlaverock Castle once again figured in the conflicts between Scotland and England in the sixteenth century.
