Abel ,Jr. was born on December 22nd, 1823. Abel ,Jr.'s father was Abel Elkin and his mother was Mary (Polly) Skaggs. His maternal grandparents were William (Squire) Skaggs and Mary Simpson. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William Melton, James, Rachel, Nancy, Betty, Polly, Diadema and Melvina. He was the second youngest of the nine children.-
