James was born in 1811 in Kentucky.1  James' father was Joshua Childers and his mother was Frances (Frankie) Crane.  His maternal grandparents were John T. Crane and Fannie Pond. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Lewis, Nathaniel, John, Thomas, William, Lucy, Nancy and Susannah.  He died at the age of 69 in 1880 in Larue Co., Kentucky.1 

James' family with Mahala Scott

James and Mahala were married on August 19th, 1833 in Green Co., Kentucky.1   They had two sons and seven daughters, named William, Milton, Susan, Mary, Nancy, Martha, Elizabeth, Harriet and Ellen.
