Drury was born in October 1842 in Van Buren Co, TN.  Drury's father was Zachariah Thomas Simmons and his mother was Mary Louisa Dodson.  His paternal grandparents were James Simmons and Stacy Ann Roberts. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William M., James, Simon Dillard, Martha Ann, Stacy E. and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
