Ryland was born in 1828 in Robertson Co, TN.1   Ryland's father was William Roberts and his mother was Elizabeth Unknown.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Roberts and Frances Langston. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Samuel B., George Wesley, John N., James Monroe, Henry H., Hannah, Rhoda and Jane.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Thomas N. Wilson.  He died at the age of 38 in 1866.1
