Monroe was born in August 1837 in Granville Co, NC.1   Monroe's father was Mark William Roberts Jr. and his mother was Sylvia Roberts.  His paternal grandparents were Mark William Roberts and Lucretia Christina Parish; his maternal grandparents were James T. Roberts and Rebecca Jones. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Simeon W., Noah, Louisa, Cornelia, Rebecca, Martha and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Marcus Franklin, Elizabeth, Nancy and Mary M..
