Adalbert was born about 1043 in Ballenstedt, Anhalt, Germany.1   Adalbert's father was Count Esiko of Anhalt-Ballenstedt and his mother was Mathilde of Anhalt-Ballenstedt.  His paternal grandparents were Adalbert von Ballenstedt and Countess Hidda of Lusatia. He had a sister named Adelheid.  He was the older of the two children.
