Margarethe was born about 1183 in Lippe, Germany.1   Margarethe's father was Bernard Zur Lippe II and her mother was Countess Heilwig of Are and Hostaden.  Her paternal grandparents were Hermann Zur Lippe I and <Unknown>; her maternal grandparents were Count Otto of Are and Countess Adelheid of Hostaden. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Hermann, Bernard, Dietrich, Otto, Gebhard, Heilwig, Kunigunde, Beatrix, Ethelind, Gertrud and Adelheid.  She was the youngest of the twelve children.
