Dietrich was born about 1175 in Lippe, Germany.1   Dietrich's father was Bernard Zur Lippe II and his mother was Countess Heilwig of Are and Hostaden.  His paternal grandparents were Hermann Zur Lippe I and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Count Otto of Are and Countess Adelheid of Hostaden. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Hermann, Bernard, Otto, Gebhard, Heilwig, Kunigunde, Beatrix, Ethelind, Gertrud, Adelheid and Margarethe.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
