William's father was William Staten and his mother was Matilda Brent. His maternal grandparents were William Brent and Elizabeth Simmons. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Alfred, Martha, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary, Malissa, Alice, America and Cassandra. He was the sixth oldest of the ten children.
