Cassandra was born in 1857 in Kentucky.¹

Cassandra's father was William Staten and her mother was Matilda Brent. Her maternal grandparents were William Brent and Elizabeth Simmons. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Alfred, William, Martha, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary, Malissa, Alice and America. She was the youngest of the ten children.
