Charles H. Marshall was called "Hodge" Marshall. He was the son of Rev. Alexander S. Marshall and Mary (Christy) Marshall. He joined the First Presbyterian Church in Marion, Iowa in 1877 at the age of 16 years. He graduated from Lake Forest College in 1881.

After graduation, Hodge Marshall started working as a clerk for the Milwaulkee Railroad and was involved with the development of railroads to the Pacific Coast. He was the superintendent for the railroad until shortly before his health forced him to retire.

He was married in 1888 to Maude Fiske (1868 - 1931).

Hodge Marshall was mayor of Marion, Iowa In 1904 and 1905.

He died at his home at 7:00 on January 5, 1924 of a lingering illness which had affected his lungs years earlier. He is buried in Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa.
