Rev. Alexander and Mary (Christy) Marshall had 9 children. 5 children died before the age of 3 years over a 14 year period (1857 - 1871). There has never been any mention of why these children died. Rev. Marshall was a known Republican.
Rev. Marshall was the son of John and Elizabeth Stewart Marshall and was next to the youngest in a family of 5 sons and 3 daughters. He was born April 29, 1829 on a farm near Dayton, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.
At the age of 16, he was considered so capable in school that he became a teacher in the public schools earning $13.00 per month. In April 1849 at the age of 20, he entered the academy at Elden Ridge. In November of 1851, he entered the junior class of Washington College - graduating in 1853. He then entered Washington Theological Seminary at Alleghney City. He entered Princeton Theological Seminary in 1854 and graduated two years later.
On April 11, 1856, he became the pastor of the First Presbyterin Church in Marion, Iowa. It was his first and only charge and he was itP
s first pastor. He later became the first moderator of the Presbyterian Synod of Iowa.
In his later years, it was known he was very absent-minded. He passed away while conducting worship at the family alter. As he was saying the Lord's prayer, his mind wandered off and he said the children's prayer "Now I lay me down to sleep ....," then putting his head down on a cushion, he died.
