John Butterfield [8], James [7], John III [6], Lieut. John II [5], Captain John I [4], Benjamin [3], Nathaniel [2], Benjamin [1]
Born on 5-2-1808, died in Lincoln on 11-19-1894. He is buried in th Lee Cemetery in a lot that is quite far from any member of the family. It appears that there is no on buried in this lot. It is not known whether he ever married or what his work was or had been. He is one of the John Butterfields that are claimed to have been a Civil War Veteran. In the beginning of the War, 1861 he would have been 53 years of age. We are aware that many older men served in this war, but John Butterfield, the son of William Butterfield, would have been only 39 years of age, so it would seem likely that he would have been the war veteran.
Just what either of these John Butterfields could have done with their lives has never come to light, there be is no Vermont or Federal record of any John Butterfield as having served this war, except the mention in the Lincoln History. It has to be expected that either one could have left Vermont when younger and somehow was in the war which is how the knowledge came about, but it certainly is somewhat far from the usual service man, but things of which we can not fathom at this late date are plentiful.
