Aethelred II, called "the Unready", succeeded to the crown in 978, upon the assassination of his half brother, Eadward the Martyr. He m. when about 17 years of age Ealfleda, daughter of the Erldormad Thored. His 2nd wife was Emma of Normandy, youngest daughter of Richard The Fearless, third Duke of Normandy.
Of his children:
Aethelstan d. cir. 1011.
Ecgberht d. young and unmarried.
Eadmund (Ironsides) succeeded his father and reigned 4-23 to 11-30-1016.
Eadred d. about 22 years old.
Eadwig survived all his brothers of the full blood and was murdered at the instigation of Cnut the Dane in 1017, his step mothers second husband.
Eadgat d. in childhood.
Eadgitha m. Eadrick, the Duke of Mercia.
Ealfgina m. Utred the Bold.
