Georg's father was Friedrich lll "Der Strenge" Markgraf von Meissen and his mother was Katharina. His paternal grandparents were Friedrich ll "Der Ernsthafte" Markg. von Meissen and Mathilde von Bayern; his maternal grandfather was Heinrich Xll von Henneberg. He had three brothers and a sister, named Friedrich lV "Der Streitbare" Kurf., Wilhelm ll " Der Reiche ", Friedrich and Katharina.
