Waldemar was born in 1919. Waldemar's father was Christian von Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld and his mother was Elisabeth Reid Rogers Baroness von Barchfeld. His paternal grandparents were Wilhelm von Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld and Auguste von Schleswig-Holstein-Gluecksburg. He had a brother and two sisters, named Richard Christian, Elisabeth and Olga. He was the second youngest of the four children.
