Alexander von Hessen and the was born in 1823. Alexander von Hessen and the's father was Ludwig II von Hessen und dem Rhein and his mother was Wilhelmina von Baden. His paternal grandparents were Ludwig I Landgraf von Hessen-Darmstadt and Louise von Hessen-Darmstadt. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Ludwig III Grand Duke, Karl Prinz, Elisabeth and Marie. He was the second youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 65 in 1888.
