His maternal grandparents were Thomas Jefferson Shreve and Rosella Lillie. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Everett Ward (Pick), Charles (Bing), Johnny Ray (Peanut), Donald Forrest (Toad), Richard Leland (Bug), Myrtle Arilla, Lela Vetress (Chink), Irene Gladys and Ethel Mae.
