John was born in 1910 in 275 Hicks Street, Brooklyn, NY. John's father was William Augustine Farren and his mother was Anna Johnson. His paternal grandparents were William Augustine Farren and Katherine Rita Murphy; his maternal grandparents were Ole Johan Osmundsen and Jensine Jensen. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, George, William Augustine, Rita Marie, Katherine Edna and Dora. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
