Laird of was born in Loch Rusky, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Laird of's father was Fifth Earl of Menteith (de jure uxoris) and his mother was Mary De Menteith. His paternal grandparents were Walter I Stewart and Beatrix Douglas; his maternal grandfather was Mauritius de Menteith. He had a brother and a sister, named Alexander and Daughter.
