Chester was born about 1868. Chester's father was James Leeland Patterson and her mother was Mahalia J. Mason. Her paternal grandparents were Charles S. Patterson and Nancy J. Smith; her maternal grandparents were John Mason and Mary Adeline Bryant. She had two sisters named Alice and Amanda. She was the second oldest of the three children.-
