Individual biographical text for: JAMES S. SIMMONS
Tradition says that James was born and first married in England. Where
his first three children were born and his wife died is open to speculation
and conjecture. He first comes to our attention in 1768 when he bought a farm
in Amherst County, Virginia from George Carrington. By this time he had
married his second wife, Mary Waters. In addition to his first three children
James, Anna and Francis, he now was the father of John and Richard.
Four years later in 1772, James sold his farm to John Dawson. There is
no record of his purchasing another farm until 178434 , twelve years later.
The only evidence of the whereabouts of the family during this time was the
enlistment of James, junior, into the army in Amherst. During this interval six
more children were born.,
In 1793 the Amherst records show three significant events for James. On
the 6th of April his daughter Charity applied for a marriage license to wed
David Patterson. On April 30 Charity's older sister, Christian, applied for
a license to marry William Morris. A few weeks later, James sold his farm.

"James Simmons emigrated from England in the 1750's. He was married twice. His first wife was from England. His second wife, Mary Waters, came from Virginia. Their children were John, Charles, Elisha, Charity, Betsie, Richard, Moses, Joshua, Nancy and Sally.'

Fall, 1856: Charles Simmons died in May, 1850 leaving widow Dedemia Simmons, now deceased. (Rutherford Census, 1850, shows Charles Simmons, 73, b. VA, and Didama, 70, b. N.C. There were no children of this couple to survive and the estate valued at $17,086.25 was inherited by his brothers and sisters or their heirs, given below. Since Charles was born about 1777, this appears to be one of Rutherford’s early Simmons families.)
