General Notes

Carloman obtained Austria, Swabia, and Thuringia upon his fathers death in 741.  Shortly after in 742, he requested a council to be held to reform the church.  There were others held over the next few years, and the members were not only ecclesiastics.   In 743/4 Carloman and Pepin were influential in the removal from priesthood and imprisonment of Scotus Clement I of Ireland.  This happened after Boniface, Archbishop of Mentz at the time, cited his acts and opinions in a synod which were deemed sundry and heretical.  Boniface was trying to reintroduce complete Roman disciplin in Germany.  He and his brother both supported Boniface, under whom the reforms of the afore mentioned councils were to take place.  Some of these included:  establishment of order and reform of lax abuses, the celibacy of the clergy, and the return of church property taken by Charles Martel.  The return of the property possition had to be let go because opposition proved to be too strong.

Unfortunately, he had to constantly fight the Allemanni (Germans) and others in order to keep his possessions.  Carloman grew tired of the fighting and hassles; so he renounced his title and possessions to his younger brother Pepin in 747, and went to Rome to become a monk.  He died in the monestery in 755.
