Alfred, known as The Great, was born about 0848 in Wantage,Berkshire.  The Great's father was Ethelwulf and his mother was Osburh.  His paternal grandfather was Egbert and his paternal grandmother is Redburh; his maternal grandfather is Oslac. He had three brothers and a sister, named Athelstan, Ethelbald, Ethelred and Ethelswith.  He was the youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother named Aethelbert ap Ethelwulf.  He died in Winchester,Hampshire.  He was buried in Hyde Abbey,New Minster,Winchester,Hampshire.

They had a son and three daughters, named Edward, Aelfthryth, Ethelfleda and Lady of the Mercians.
