His paternal grandfather was Anthony Hungerford and his paternal grandmother is Janet Darrell; his maternal grandparents were John Fettiplace and Dorothy Danvers. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Henry, Anne, Bridget, Dorothy, Mary and Susan. He was the oldest of the eight children.
