His paternal grandfather was Hugh De Venables Knight and his paternal grandmother is Katherine De Houghton 2 wife; his maternal grandparents were Hamon Fitton and Elizabeth Thornton. He had two brothers and a sister, named Sir William, Oliver Whitley and Joan. He is the second oldest of the four children.-
