Ithel ap was born about 1080 in Dyffryn Clwyd, Denbighshire, Wales.  Ithel ap's father was Einudd Gwerngwy ap Morein and his mother is Eva verch Llewelyn.  His paternal grandparents are Morien ap Morgan Gwerngwy and Gwenllian verch Rhys; his maternal grandparents are Llewelyn ap Dolphyn and Gwenllain verch Rhys. He had a brother and a sister, named Heilin ap and Hunydd verch.  He is the youngest of the three children.
