Edgar, called The Peaceful (944-75), Saxon king of the English (959-75),younger son of King Edmund I. In 957, during the rule of his brother,King Edwy, Edgar was chosen by the Mercians and Northumbrians to be theirsovereign. One of his first acts was to recall the monastic reformer St.Dunstan, whom Edwy had exiled; Edgar subsequently made Dunstan bishop ofWorcester and London and archbishop of Canterbury.

In 959 Edgar succeeded to the entire English Kingdom. His reign wasnotable for the establishment of national consolidation, reformation ofthe clergy, improvement of the judiciary system, and formation of a fleetto defend the coast against the Scandinavian Vikings.

Edgar, b. 943, d. July 8, 975, was king of the English from 959. Ayounger son of King Edmund of Wessex, he became king of Mercia andNorthumbria on the deposition (957) of his brother, Edwy, whom he alsosucceeded as king of Wessex (959).

Edgar appointed St. Dunstan (924-88) archbishop of Canterbury andsupported his monastic reforms. In 973 Dunstan crowned Edgar in aceremony that emphasized the close ties between king and church. This wasfollowed by another ceremony in which Edgar received homage from sevenWelsh and Scottish kings. Edgar was succeeded by his son Edward theMartyr.
