General Notes
Elijah seved under Captain James C. Crawford. The unit was in Lynches Creek, South Carolina in Feb. 25, 1865. Elijah had been sent on a "detail" from Headquarters as a forager to gather supplies for the subsistence of the Army. whilst in the discharge of his duty, he was attacked by the enemy. He received several saber cuts on the head, shoulders and arms. He was admitted to Regimental Hospital on February 26, 1865, and was discharged July 13, 1865 at Louisville, KY. Another letter from Capt. Crawford states the the duties of a Forager were arduous and dangerous. They were a special mark for the vengance of the enemy, and in this case, Davis would have been killed had not his assailant,(who was reported to be a mounted Confederate officer), been shot and killed, by a comrade of the 66th IL Infantry, who was armed with a repeating (Henry) Rifle. The horse and equipment of his assailant were brought into camp.
