Richard was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Richard's father was Richard Woodward and his mother was Jane Petty Nayle.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Woodward and Alice Scrope; his maternal grandparents are Henry Nyle and UNKNOWN Deborah. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Robert, William, William, Edward, Joseph, Thomas, Sarah, Jane, Martha and Mary.  He died after 1721 in Pennsylvania.  He was buried on November 17th, 1752 in Londongrove, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

‌Richard and Mary were married in a religious ceremony about 1717 in Chester Meeting of Friends, Chester County, Pennsylvania.  They had a daughter named Susanna.
