John FitzGilbert the was born in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales or Normandy, France.  John FitzGilbert the's father was Gilbert FitzRichard Mareschall de Clare and his mother was Adeliza de Clermont.  His paternal grandparents were Richard FitzGilbert de Clare and Rohese Giffard; his maternal grandparents were Hugh de Creil of Clermont and Marguerite de Roucy de Montdidier. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Richard FitzGilbert, Gilbert Strongbow FitzGilbert, Baldwin FitzGilbert, Adeliza (Alice), Margaret, Rohese and Agnes. He had a half-brother named Hervey.  He died in 1165.
