Maria Magdalena was born on September 24th, 1790 in Hereford Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Maria Magdalena's father was Heinrich Heimbach and her mother was Catherine Wetzel. Her paternal grandparents were Matthias Johann Heimbach and Susanna Weske; her maternal grandparents were Johan Jacob Wetzel and Anna Maria Bassler. She had three brothers and nine sisters, named Heinrich, Johan Peter, David, Susanna, Catherine, Elisabeth, Eva, Maria Barbara, Maria Elizabeth, Gertraut, Christine and Sarah. She is the fourth youngest of the thirteen children.-
