James the Lame was born about 1496.  James the Lame's father was Piers Butler and his mother was Margaret FitzGerald.  His paternal grandparents were James Butler and Sabine Kavanagh; his maternal grandparents are Gerald FitzGerald and Alison FitzEustace.  He was an only child.  He died on October 28th, 1546 in London, England.  He was buried in St. Thomas of Acon, London.

‌James the Lame and Joan were married in a religious ceremony before December 21st, 1532.  They had seven sons named Thomas Dubh, Piers Butler of, James Butler of, John Butler of, Edmund Butler of, Walter Butler of and Edward Butler of.
