Her maternal grandparents were James Flemin Steffey and Mahola Clemetine Burnett. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named James Lawrence, Roy Lee, Hezekiah Taft, John Otto, Eula Bertha, Nanne Mae, Nora, Iva Lucille, Leona Helen, Mildred Ebra and Viola Elizabeth.
