Underwood and his paternal grandmother is Mariah J. Druien. He had two brothers and three sisters, named General Thomas, John Hamilton, Mariah Elliot, Nancy Ellen and Margaret Jane. He had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Wilson E., Elijah M., Lizzie B., Cely M., Sallie M. and Henry E..
