Fay's father was Chester Young Shofner and her mother was Amy Frances DeSpain. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Jefferson Shofner and Louisa Catherine Skaggs; her maternal grandparents were Richard Marshall DeSpain and Ida Frances Skaggs.
