His paternal grandparents were Leroy Davis Sanders and Irene Basham; his maternal grandparents are James Johnson and Ann Northcutt. He had a brother and four sisters, named James Morgan, Stella Mae, Little Totsy, Iletta Rebecca Irene and Jaylie Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the six children.
