May was born on November 13th, 1900.1 May's father was Augustus Abner Hill and her mother was Martha Jane Keahey. Her maternal grandparents were George Pleasant Keahey and Susanah Berry. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Joseph Merritt, Pleasant A., Verdia Little, Eual Garland, William Edward, Mary, June E. and Effie M..
