Her paternal grandparents were Alphia Alford Graham and Helen Alice Johnson. She had eight sisters named Saphronia Jane, Claire Rebecca, Helon Docia, Zilphie Virginia, Gertrude Cornelius, Feenie Elebelle, Sadie and Zelma Blanche. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 82 on May 15th, 1976 in Horry Co., South Carolina.
