Joseph Alston was born on March 2nd, 1827 in Statesville, Iredell, NC.1 Joseph Alston's father was Joseph Davidson and his mother was Emma Selina Hart. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Davidson and Jane Henrietta Clayton. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Robert Quincy, Andrew Augustus, Thomas Melmoth Clayton, Ritta Elisabeth, Sarah Amanda, Martha Elvira, Selina Emaline and Mary Jane. He was the oldest of the nine children. He had two half-brothers named Milas Alexander and John. He died at the age of 38 on June 1st, 1865.
