James Calvin (Jim) was born on November 30th, 1895 in French Gulch, Shasta Co., Calif.1 James Calvin (Jim)'s father was Francis Alvia (Frank) Basham and his mother was Nancy J. Sevedge. His paternal grandparents were Greene Berry Basham and Eliza Ann Conway. He had three brothers and a sister, named Ellis Ainsley, Roy Frank, Russell Kenton and Elberta H.. In his youth James Calvin Bassham, called Jim, helped his parents w
ho we re running a stage coach stop called "The Toll House" on a stage coa
ch ro ad between Delta (Volmers) in the Sacramento Canyon (40 miles nor
th of Red ding) and Trinity Center where there was an important gold mini
ng area. H is Father, Frank Bassham, had been a stage coach driver earlie
r. One job J im did was hunt for game for the Toll House, and he remain
ed a dedicated h unter and fisherman all his life.
When the United States entered World War I he was about 22 and enli
st ed in the army. He served until the end of the war, being discha
rg ed as a corporal after having learned a number of practical skill
s. In la ter life he worked as a mine foreman, and director of road build
ing by t he Civilian Conservation Corps in the thirties, a foreman and ass
istant ra nger for the forest service, and a line repair man for the Orego
n-Californ ia Power Company (a job requiring him to ski to the remote are
as where t he power line crossed the Trinity mountains from Castella to Tr
inity Cente r). His last major job was assaying drilling cores for gold d
redging comp anies. He moved a large house in Trinity Center and built o
ne in French Gu lch. He was truly a "Jack-of-all-trades". Information prov
