PROMINENT RESIDENT SUCCUMBS TUESDAY
W. J. Basham, Well Known Business Man, Dies Tuesday at East Hill Ho
me O ne of Johnson county's most prominent business men and one of Clarksv
ille 's best known citizens, W. J. Basham, 74 years old, died at his ho
me on Ea st Hill last Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Born 6 miles nor
th of he re February 9, 1859, Mr Basham had spent all his life in Clarksvi
lle and J ohnson County. He had engaged in the grocery business in Clarks
ville f or the last 52 years before his retirement a few years ago.
During the entire time the First National Bank operated in the cit
y, Mr B asham was first vice-president. He had been a member of the ci
ty counc il and the Clarksville school board, and had been a member of t
he First Pr esbyterian church all of his life. He was married to Lucy Rag
on of Logan c ounty, September 6, 1883. Mr and Mrs Basham celebrated the
ir golden weddi ng anniversary at their home here September 6. They had m
ade their ho me in this city throughout their married life. Besides bei
ng a prominent m erchant, he was well known for his activity and intere
st in civic affair s.
He was an honorary member of the local Franklin lodge numb
er 9, F. a nd A. M. Funeral service was conducted this afternoon at 3 o'cl
ock at t he First Presbyterian church, with Reverend Elbert Hefner, past
or of Fo rt Smith and former pastor of the local church, and Reverend Will
iam Fen na Rogers, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial was made at O
akland c emetery, with the Hardwick Funeral Home of this city in char
ge of arrangem ents. The Franklin Lodge was in charge of a special servi
ce at the grav e. Pallbearers were;

Mr Basham is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs Agnes Stewart of S
tu ttgart; three sons, Ragon Basham and Robert Basham of this city; Charl

m, bo th of this city; seven sisters, Mrs W B Lee of this city, Mrs N L Gr
een, M rs Reece Horricks, Mrs Julia Miller, all of Little Rock; Mrs Hann
ah Re ed of Minatore, Nebraska; Mrs Minnie Martin of Phoenix, Arizona; M
